Microbial stories and radical action . . .

Hello!

Happy November!

Writing news . . .

I’m excited to share the news that a short story I’ve written has been selected for inclusion in a fiction anthology published by Habitat Press. The book is called Stories from the Microbial World and will be out later this month – just in time for Christmas!

This November my YA book recommendation is Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. I love an author on a mission! Mathieu is passionate about feminism and this is a really inspiring story about how people working together can make change happen – collective action rocks!

My favourite thing about this book is that is has a great protagonist but isn’t a ‘hero’ story – instead of one brave individual saving the day, a whole bunch of flawed, relatable, likeable teenagers take radical action. Mathieu tackles issues of racism and homophobia alongside sexism, touching on the way well-intentioned social justice movements can accidentally exclude people. Oh, and there’s even romance in the mix. High school, equality mission, romance; ticks all the boxes!

There’s one more book I can’t resist mentioning – my debut novel, Enough, is still available for pre-order here!

Lazy green wins #5

One of my favourite ‘eco’ messages is this: buy less stuff! I love it because it’s so simple. Go shopping? Nah, sit on the sofa and read more library books!

Of course, this is the time of year when there’s more pressure than ever to buy buy buy, and Black Friday can be a particularly crazy moment in the seasonal frenzy. There are lots of reasons to resist (Ethical Consumer give a good summary).

So instead of Black Friday, why not observe Buy Nothing Day (even books)! It’s free and takes zero effort, all you have to do is . . . nothing!

Do you have any seasonal eco tips or good reads to share? Hit reply, I'd love to hear from you!

Until next time,

Happy reading!

Laura

Hello! Happy August! Book News, Good & Bad . . . One of the lovely things about putting a book out into the world is encountering unexpected readers. I’ve had comments and reviews from people of all ages, and was particularly delighted this month to hear from a retired soil scientist who had read Dirt! I did a lot of research while writing the book, as I didn’t want to get any farming facts wrong, and according to my scientific reader the agricultural studying paid off: “Scientists aren't...

Hello! Happy July! Book news . . . I’ve been busy promoting Dirt in a variety of ways – it was exciting to receive a set of Dirt bookmarks in the post, to give away at bookshops and festivals! I also really enjoyed being interviewed by Denise Baden, founder of Habitat Press and Professor of Sustainable Practice at the University of Southampton – we talked about the writing of Dirt for her monthly newsletter on Creative Climate Communication. I’ve posted the interview on my website in case...

Hello! Happy June! Book News . . . Last week I spent a very enjoyable evening meeting members of the Northfields Community Library YA book group, talking about Dirt and writing and imagination activism! If you think your library, school or book group would welcome a visit, do get in touch. Dirt has been out for a few weeks now and it’s been wonderful hearing readers’ opinions! My favourite comments so far include: “Dirt is such a good book that it’s definitely in my top three!” (R, age 11)...
