A Christmas gift & deconstructed crackers…

Hello!

Happy December!

Book news . . .

Thank you for subscribing to my monthly musings, I am so grateful you’re here!

By way of a thank you, here’s a small Christmas gift: Guitar, a short story set in the world of my book, Dirt. If you’ve read the novel, you’ll recognise Sam and his family. If you haven’t, the story works as a mini-prequel to Dirt, so there’s no fear of spoilers!

Guitar will be appearing in a new anthology published by Habitat Press in the New Year, so this is a free sneak preview just for you…

Reading recommendation

I love the title of this huge anthology: The Most Important Comic Book on Earth! The pun is irresistible, as are the contents, and I’d recommend it as a top Christmas present for any young (or old!) environmentalist. It’s a big fat collection of comics in all different styles, and proceeds support environmental charities including Greenpeace, the World Land Trust, the Wildlife Trusts and Rewilding Europe.

Of course, if you need another last-minute gift idea there’s always my novel Dirt – perfect for 11-14 year-old readers! I have a (very) limited number of copies I can sign & send within the UK, just reply to this email, or it's available to order from the usual Waterstones, Amazon etc here!

Lazy green wins #18

Christmas is a funny time for green geeks. I love all the gift-giving and feeling of community spirit, and I hate the amount of waste – wasted packaging, wasted food, unwanted presents, wasted anxious energy!

I try to hold onto the simple sustainable motto: avoid buying anything you know you’ll throw away. So, instead of buying crackers for the Christmas table, I’ll be wrapping tiny presents alongside plain cracker snaps and handwritten jokes, and passing round a sack of silly hats for people to choose from! The deconstructed cracker leaves virtually nothing to throw away and, best of all, is much more fun!

However you celebrate, I hope this festive season is a happy and relaxed time for you and your loved ones. See you next year!

Until next time,

Happy reading!

Laura

Hello! Happy November! Book News . . . Last month, I mentioned that I’ve been working on a new short story set in the world of my latest novel, Dirt. I’m happy to report that the story is now finished – apart from some final polishing – and will be appearing in a new anthology published by Habitat Press in the New Year! I’m also eagerly waiting to hear from a team of teenage beta readers, who’ve been given a nearly-final-draft of my novel, Nourish. They’ve volunteered to read the manuscript...

Hello! Happy October! Book News . . . When I was a kid, I chose books by weight. If there was a choice between two novels, I’d select the biggest one – then, if I liked it, there was all the more to enjoy. All my life, my bags have been heavy with books as big as bricks! So it’s been an unusual change for me this month to be writing a short story! And, to my surprise, I’m really enjoying it. It’s a completely different challenge from writing novels, and it’s also given me the pleasure of...

Hello! Happy September! Book news . . . August was a busy month, with glamping at the wonderful Green Gathering Festival (where I met not one but three of my eco-heroes!) and a family train-travel-adventure through France and Brussels. I read a lot of books, but freely admit I didn’t do much writing! A quieter September has given me the chance to revisit two manuscripts – my YA novels Nourish and Enough. These were due to come out with Neem Tree Press (the publisher that went bust, as I...
